What pedal assist actually feels like

We rode every assist level back to back so you don’t have to guess at the spec sheet.

Your legs still set the rhythm

Pedal assist is designed to complement your input while you pedal. The feeling varies by motor system and its settings, so the best explanation is a test ride on the model you are considering. This demo guide describes common impressions; it is not a measured comparison of the demo products.

Begin at the lowest setting

Start in a quiet, open area with a low assistance level. Practice starting, stopping and changing gears until the controls feel familiar. You may notice that acceleration needs less effort, especially after a stop. Keep your hands ready on the brakes and give yourself room to become comfortable.

Choose assistance for the route

A lower setting may be enough on a flat section, while a higher setting can help on a climb. Change gears as you would on a conventional bike and use the motor system according to its manual. Higher assistance generally asks more of the battery; actual range depends on far more than the mode name.

Look beyond the first five minutes

Try a slow turn, a hill and a section with assistance reduced. Then walk the bike and check its storage needs. These ordinary moments tell you more about daily ownership than a quick acceleration test. Ask our team to explain the controls and the support available for your chosen system.
