What to carry on your first longer ride

A light, practical packing list for going a little further from home.
Plan around the route
A longer ride begins with knowing where you can stop, refill water and turn back. Choose a route that matches your experience and check the conditions before leaving. Let someone know your plan when heading somewhere unfamiliar, and keep enough time for an unhurried return.
Pack for small problems
Carry the tools and repair supplies that match your bike and that you know how to use. A spare tube is only useful if it fits your tire and valve setup. Check your pump at home, keep a charged phone accessible and consider what you would do if a repair is beyond your experience.
Comfort matters more than packing perfectly
Bring water, food appropriate for your plans and a layer for changing conditions. Secure bags so they do not interfere with steering or the wheels. A shorter practice ride with the same load is a useful way to discover what needs adjusting before you travel further.
