Prepare before the forecast changes
Wet rides are easier to enjoy when the bike is ready before the first downpour. Look at tire condition, brake wear and the visibility of your lights. A fresh layer of dirt can hide a worn part, so start with a gentle clean and an inspection. Follow your component manuals when checking wear limits.
Make room for longer stops
Water and road debris change grip and braking conditions. Ride at a pace that leaves room to respond, brake smoothly and avoid abrupt direction changes. Painted markings and metal covers deserve extra care. Choose tire pressure within the limits recommended for your tire and rim; there is no single wet-weather pressure for every rider.
The practical case for mudguards
When your frame and tire clearance allow them, properly fitted mudguards reduce spray on you and the bike. Confirm compatibility before fitting them and keep the required clearance around the tire. A local mechanic can help you select a setup that stays secure on rough surfaces.
Finish with a short care routine
After the ride, remove loose dirt with a gentle wash, dry the bike and care for the chain using a compatible lubricant. Keep lubricant away from braking surfaces.
